Back To DC?
A reader sends this story about the Expos moving to DC. Looks like MLB is going to decide to move the team, then find a buyer. What a long strange trip it's been.
It's about time. Utterly disgraceful that MLB has owned one of the teams. And the fact that it took so long to move & find an owner makes Bud Selig & co. look like the Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight.
Now they have to mollify Angelos. (Hey Pete, putting a crappy team on the field is going to hurt you, not a team 35 miles away.)
So. . . does the team get the Senators name?
I'm trying to be optimistic, but I'm only going to believe it when I see it. For now, I'll remain skeptical.
As far as the naming of the team goes, I think that the Senators is a pretty good name. Sure, the Rangers and the Twins both have a claim to the history of the name, but I can't really think of anything that's any better.
Looking at what other sports have done recently with regards to the naming of new teams, I think it would be a good idea to go in a different direction. For example, the Bobcats, Panthers (multiple sports), Grizzlies, Hornets, and Predators. I must admit that I really like the naming of the Colorado Rockies and the Houston Texans. I thought that they were pretty good names that are representative of the markets they cover. When the Jazz were in New Orleans, that was a fitting name but, it's time for them to pick a new name that fits better with their current market.
So, in short, use the Senators. It fits.
Yeah, I've always liked it when the name evokes local culture, geography, or history. I'd go for Senators.
Actually, if they are going to be by MLB for another year, they should be called the Washington Generals. :-) If you put a lot of slow guys on the team, you could call them the Washington Monuments. How about the Capitol Mall Rats? Actually, given all the traffic circles in town, the Washington Roundabouts might be good.
finally, my Expos will have a real chance to compete again.
MLB has bungled this so bad for so long...
It is difficult for me to believe the move won't hurt the O's a bit at the gate (especially corporate purchases), and quite a bit losing that TV market. To think it doesn't lacks understanding of how important local TV/radio revenue is.
