Discount Free Agents

Buster Olney looks at how the market is collapsing for free agents.

I believe one of the reasons the Yankees are spending so much this year is that they are getting their players for a relatively low price. When you're cash rich in a down market, it's a good time to acquire assets.

I don't know about that.... I wouldn't say Sabathia or Burnett came for a relatively low price... especially when the former signs a record deal for a pitcher.

Agreed Jesse. They obviously went above and beyond what anyone else offered either of those 2 players.

You miss my point. The Yankees picked up Sabathia for about the same money the Mets paid Santana. There was no salary inflation this year. The Yankees realize that savings throughout the entire contract.

Fair point, but we are in a deflationary environment. If the Yanks were not scared we would see that economic trend ripple into baseball as it has in the past. Cash has been bidding and raising against himself. He is, as always, weak in the knees but strong in the wallet. Given the economic outlook I've no idea how this plays at home, but it will bring Yankee hatred to a new level around baseball. re the home concern, fans that cannot afford to attend games might react in a different fashion than one would expect.
