Rays Sweep

The Rays hold on for a 7-6 win over the Red Sox. Boston had a threat in the 9th, but Upton recovered from a bad start on a long fly ball off Youkilis's bat to make a great catch in deep center, and then the Red Sox tried to hit and run twice with Lowell on first and Varitek at the plate. On the first one, Jason pulled the ball foul. On the second one, the captain swung and missed, and Lowell was out at second. Varitek ended up striking out to end the game. The Red Sox are now 3 1/2 games back. They are going into New York for a four game series, four games in front of the Yankees for the wild card.

Bad nite for Tito - He should have left Matsuzaka out there - Red Sox needed a win. God knows how much proof he needs that Hansen can't get out big league hitters in the 7th, 8th or any other inning. That slider works about once a week but Tito trots him out there 4 times. Maybe the hit and run was a good idea the first time but it sure back fired the second time. DRays are going to be up 6.5 at the break.

rays will be tough all year.Only question is how will the young arms hold up as they get to 200 innings.Tito needs to stop babying Dice K.Let him go 120 pitches.Of course that only gets you 6 innings.

Francona should never do anything creative with Varitek at the plate, especially with the funk he's going through now. The only benefit for the Sox, as compared to '06, is that their underbelly is being shown now, before the trading deadline. I agree the Rays could be up by 6 or 7 games at the break. Theo Espstein, like in 2004, better be busy at the trading deadline (same for Brian Cashman) or the Rays will win the East.
