Myers Wife Wishes She was on the Reds

Brett Myers has a no-hitter with one out in the seventh. He's walked four. There's no score in the game as Volquez is also pitching brilliantly, allowing two hits and striking out seven through six innings.

Update: Votto breaks up the no-hitter with two outs in the seventh, doubling in Phillips who walked and stole second. Cincinnati leads 1-0.

Oooooooooooohhhhhhhh. I have to laugh at the title. Terrible, but funny.

A headline making light of the fact that Brett Myers beats his wife in public? Really?

Classy.

Posted by: Vegas Watch at June 4, 2008 09:21 PM

Awful, awful title.

Completely offensive. Completely unfunny.

I expect better than you, David.

Posted by: dave at June 4, 2008 10:15 PM

So I'm not allowed to remind people that Myers is a violent jerk?

Posted by: David Pinto at June 4, 2008 10:19 PM

How many of you folks defend Bonds every time he's badmouthed? Or is steroids somehow worse than wife-beating in your worlds?

Posted by: Sal Paradise at June 4, 2008 10:28 PM

I thought it was funny.

Posted by: JC at June 4, 2008 10:37 PM

I'm offended by the missing apostrophe after Myers.

I laughed out loud at the joke, though.

Posted by: Daniel at June 4, 2008 10:40 PM

Jeez people, calm down. It wasn't that offensive. Like Daniel said, I'm more irked by the missing apostrophe than anything else.

Posted by: Jeff B. at June 4, 2008 11:06 PM

With you on this one David.I cheered when the Red's got their first hit. Hope this jerk never gets a no hitter and for that matter hope he never wins another game. Sorry to Philly fans, but this guy is a classless jerk that does not deserve to be honored for anything.

"So I'm not allowed to remind people that Myers is a violent jerk?"

What, exactly, does that headline accomplish? Are you trying to say that you're doing a public service?

That kind of thing is completely out of place on this blog. You're not Deadspin. Don't try to be.

Posted by: Vegas Watch at June 4, 2008 11:52 PM

It's not offensive, but I do think it was in bad taste and unbecoming.

But I also agree Myers is a violent jerk (the Kendrick prank is more evidence of this) and it's hard to hate a guy sooo much on a team I love sooo much. but i do.

I'm sure Myers' wife would be happy you are making light of the fact that she was beaten by her husband in public

I thought the headline was appropriate. Brett Myers is one of my all-time least favorite players and it's important to remember what he did (in public in front of multiple witnesses).

Posted by: Andrew at June 5, 2008 12:25 AM

Terrible, terrible title. David, I expect better from you.

Posted by: Carlos at June 5, 2008 12:27 AM

Hillarious title, lighten up folks.

Posted by: Richie at June 5, 2008 06:46 AM

The title is inappropriate.

It's certainly acceptable to point out that Myers was a violent, drunken bully to his wife two years ago. You didn't do that. You put Myers' wife at the center of the joke. That's different.

Also, do you know that Myers still behaves like a violent, drunken bully to his wife? Are you up-to-date on his relationship with his wife? I have no idea where they stand, so I don't pretend that their life is static (or dynamic, for that matter).

What Myers did was indefensible. It will never be defensible, and his character will always be less than it could've been because of that incident. Conceded because I agree. But I guess we're through with second chances? Unless you know something we don't, in which case you should state it in the entry. But you didn't even state that Myers is a jerk and you're happy he didn't get the no-hitter. You just made a tasteless, unfunny joke at his wife's expense.

Brett and Kim Myers have apparently reconciled. At least they're showing up for SPCA fundraisers together:

As for Chase Utley's wife...GOLLY!!!!

Posted by: Casey Abell at June 5, 2008 08:50 AM

Actually, I had forgotten about Brett Myers' actions. Thanks for bringing it back up David. It's important to not let this type of behavior get swept under the rug and forgotten.

Posted by: rbj at June 5, 2008 09:30 AM

Look... you can bring attention to the fact that Myers is a jerk, but it is not something that should be used for humor.

Spousal abuse is simply not funny.

Posted by: dave at June 5, 2008 09:31 AM

The idea that Myers' actions could ever be "swept under the rug" is ridiculous. Google Brett Myers wife and you'll see what I mean. At least the news cache produced the picture of Chase Utley's wife, which made the search...worthwhile.

The news story indicates that the couple appear to be reconciled. Maybe clever-headline bloggers could give it a rest for a while?

Posted by: Casey Abell at June 5, 2008 09:40 AM

What a dumbass

Posted by: Bandit at June 5, 2008 10:09 AM

What an intelligent comment.

Posted by: Casey Abell at June 5, 2008 10:24 AM

Nothing wrong with the headline, it is funny and accurate and it does not mock spousal abuse. Lighten up.

Posted by: abe at June 5, 2008 12:55 PM

i thought it was funny and i am female. and no fan of brett myers neither

the vast majority of wives whose husbands beat on them don't leave. even when they have the money/opportunity as mrs myers does.

it doesn't excuse brett from shoving his fist in her face in the first place. and i am glad that david hasn't forgotten.

i often wonder how the bretts of the world would behave if, every time they put their fist in their wife's face, some male who was that much larger and more powerful than the beater did exactly that to him...

Posted by: lisa at June 5, 2008 04:31 PM

Agree, lisa. i didn't find it in bad taste etc. Wasn't exactly funny, but really, it doesn't have to be. Myers is a jerk, everyone knows this, it has cost him $$$, and there is no real harm done (or glory in) calling him out.

OTOH, Chase Utley wins the "dude who looks like Nick cage" award. How is that possible?
