No Hit Tek
NESN is reporting that Varitek is the first catcher to receive four no hitters. They left Torborg off their graphic as catchers who caught three. Can anyone think of anyone else who caught four?
Add to that Schilling's near no-hitter last season, and Varitek's had quite the low-hit career.

For years Ray Schalk was credited with catching 4 no-hitters, but then the rules committee took away Jim Scott's, which he lost in extra innings.
You know, in another era, 'Tek might be considered HoF caliber. Just my opinion.
What's amazing is that I'm pretty sure 'Tek caught at least three other no-hitters into the ninth... Schill's last year and I'm almost positive Pedro had two go 8 and a third, 8 and two thirds... I know Wake had an 8 and two thirds, but that would've been 'Belli.
Since the Hansack no-no was only for five innings, does it really count? I don't think MLB counts those as official no-nos anymore. So wouldn't that leave Varitek with having caught only three no-hitters?
John Royal, his four, I believe are Lester, Buchholz, Lowe, and Nomo.
In 2000, Pedro Martinez took a no hitter against the Devil Rays into the ninth with two outs, then lost it; and Jason Varitek caught that one, too. Here's a CBC article reporting it.
So Varitek not only has caught two no hitters, but he's come extremely close to catching 6. Not too shabby.
Mark Haverty, thanks. I just completely forgot about Nomo tossing that no-hitter with the BoSox.
That's why I love this site, someone always has the right answer.
Check out my blog and find out that Varitek is a co-record holder with catcher Ray Schalk who played from 1912-1929.
For trivia, name the only catcher with two perfect games. Hint: He was mostly a back-up catcher and the perfectos were 10 years apart.
