Memorable 500th

Jim Thome made his 500th home run count in a big way. The White Sox scored eight runs in their last three at bats, erasing a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Angels 9-7. The last two runs came on a walk-off home run by Jim Thome both winning the game and becoming the third player this season to reach the 500 milestone. Hats off to Jim Thome on becoming the 23rd player in major league history to reach that level.

I was at the game in my season ticket bleacher seat, about eight rows in front of the guy who caught Thome's 500th . Several interesting tidbits:

- Thome is the first player to hit his 500th home run as a walk-off game winner!

- The White Sox promo that day was Jim Thome bobbleheads, which look like Thome's classic stance holding the bat out straight in his outstretched left arm. Of course, the promo was announced prior to the start of the season, which makes it so much sweeter.

- The security staff wore little backpacks all game, and when Thome hit his 500th we found out why: they gave out commemorative cards to all the fans present. The cards have a special "thank you" message from Jim.

Oops. That should be "outstretched *right* arm".

Duh.
