660

Craig Biggio knocked out two doubles this evening, raising his career total to 660. That's the same number of home runs Willie Mays hit. He needs six more to pass George Brett for fifth on the all time list. Of course, he may have a devil of a time getting there. :-)

The Astros lead the Phillies 7-3 in the top of the ninth.

Update: Dan Wheeler gives up a bases loaded double to Ruiz, but the Astros manage to hang on for a 7-5 win as Trever Miller comes on and gets the save. It seems Astros relievers like to keep fans on the edge of their seats in the ninth this year.

Also, rookie Hunter Pence has 2 more hits, including a HR. This follows a 4 hit performance the previous night. This article about Pence seeking out advice from Biggio and other veterans is interesting.

Pence seems to have a habit of giving a lot of credit for his performances to veterans on the ballclub. That is a smart thing to do.

Beastly pun there, David.

1 - everytime someone in the bullpen comes in with a lead, us fans get BAD high blood and stomach aches. none of the leaving in the 7th inning

2 - i also have noticed that pence seems to talk almost exclusively to biggio/palmeiro.

it is very VERY interesting that whenever pence leaves guys on base, pops out or fails to make a catch, as he did on ruiz' ball last night, there is not ONE word of complaining from the fans. or broadcasters. if that was chris burke out there who had dropped that ball, he would have needed an armed escort out of the ballpark

which reminds me, do you have any DER stats on pence so far?

Lisa, a link to Zone Rating stats at Hardball Times:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/main/index.php?view=fielding&linesToDisplay=50&orderBy=zone_rating&direction=DESC&qual_filter=1&season_filter%5B%5D=2007&league_filter%5B%5D=2&pos_filter%5B%5D=8&Submit=Submit

Pence isn't bad in CF. He looks to be about middle of the pack among CFers. His ZR is higher than Taveras', but Willy T gets a lot more "out of zone" plays.

Let me correct what I just wrote. Willy Taveras and Pence are just about the same in out of zone plays. I was reading the wrong line for Willy T.
