A-Rod is so admirable that he tried to chop the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove in the 2004 ALCS Game 6. To me, this is A-Rod's defining moment: late in a game with his team's chances fading away, he elects to cheat, and in such a way as to make him look both effeminate and publicly wrong. He is concerned with his image, yes, but only to the extent that he is in good graces with with Murray Chasses of the world. Even there he has failed. That is, there is something despicable about him that rises to the level of only the second-rate; a very good player, yes, but also profoundly selfish and petty.
