Old Knee

Shawn Chacon suffers from arthritis in his right knee:

Chacon has had two surgeries on the meniscus inside the knee, and he strongly considered having another after last season. But a doctor advised him in October that doing so would only exacerbate the problem, and all concerned decided against it.

"I've got some pretty good arthritis," Chacon said. "The thought process was that, if I can keep my leg strong enough to where I can minimize the pain and the fluid that gets in there from day to day, I'll be better off than if I go in there again to have it scoped, shave out more meniscus and basically creating more arthritis."

Chacon has made his scheduled pitching sessions and run through all fielding drills this spring with no apparent problem.

The Pirates are pretty good at adding injured pitchers to their staff.

Dave Littlefield has an uncanny ability to acquire players who are already injured, or get injured shortly after being acquired.

And trading away guys thats actually good, or will be good later for the above meantioned guys.

Chacon can be a useful back end guy though, espically for that league, as long as he walks Lance Berkman and Albert Pujols everytime they step up to the plate of course.

Would it shock you to see the Pirates not finish last this year? i wouldn't, i fully expect the Reds to finish last, though if enough things screw up it certainly seems possible for the Brewers or Astros to end up there too. in another word, it's a crappy division that miraculasly produced a champion team last year.
