NL Central Predictions

Pittsburgh Lumber Co. hosts a round table discussion of the NL Central. Each guest picked the division 1-6. I went back to a previous post from the owner of the blog and took down his picks as well. I then added all the places together to come up with this combined prediction for the NL Central (lowest points the best):

TeamSum of Rank
Milwaukee12
Chicago14
St. Louis16
Houston24
Cincinnati25
Pittsburgh35

So it looks like a tight, three-way race for first in the central, a close battle for fourth and fifth, and the Pirates bringing up the rear.

All these people who are jumping on the Brewers are just silly.....These Brewers are not last year's Tigers, they are last year's Brewers....Overpaying for Jeff Suppan does not put them over the top, even in a sorry-ass division like the NL Central.....Puh-leeze.....

I've gotta agree that the Brewers should have a decent chance of winning the division, but I'd put STL second. The Cubs are an arm injury to Zambrano away from having a horrible pitching staff.

The Brewers are loaded. Their lineup is solid all the way through, with a good mix of young guys who are still getting better, and capable veterans. The rotation is shaping up to being pretty strong; Suppan is a great addition. If Sheets is healthy, I'm convinced that the Brewers are the best team in the Central.

IF Sheets stays healthy, IF Weeks stays healthy, IF Jenkins can hit, IF Mench isn't completely washed, IF Cordero repeats his last year's feats (won't be so easy the second time around the NL, either....he's not that good), IF Turnbow got psychotherapy, IF they can find a third baseman....Face it, your boys have as many questions as anyone else in that division. Yes, their chances are as good as anyone's in that pathetic collection of poop known as the NL Central.....But putting your hopes in Ben Sheets is like putting them in Mark Prior or Kerry Wood.....Good luck, dude, your Brew Crew will need it....But that's why they play the games, isn't it?

A healthy sheets places in the top 3 in the NL Cy Young this year. Can't think of any offseason moves by division rivals that even comes close.

And Hall to CF with Hardy back at SS bolsters the defense quite a bit as well.

Wow, a healthy Sheets.....quite a "move", if it happens, never a guarantee with him.....Pardon me if I don't hold my breath.....Offseason moves? Um, can you say S-o-r-i-a-n-o?

Compared to the Cubs and Cards, the Brewers top hitters don't even carry the jocks of those two teams, and wake the hell up from your dreamworld if you think they can (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Pujols, Rolen- Some of the best hitters in the NL). One thing I noticed is the Brewers' young hitters' very low contact rate (Fielder, Hall, and Gross, and Weeks all in the low 70's). That means lots of K's, not enough walks to justify those rates, and stranded runners at second. Fielder is another year away from greatness (pretty pedestrian second half last year..) and Weeks is at least two (he did mangle his wrist last year pretty bad, and there are big holes in his game). Where the Brewers actually seems strongest in the division to me, as none of you Brewer lovers have pointed out, is in the 3-4-5 part of the rotation. Sheets, Suppan and Bush are a solid lineup there, moreso than any other 3-5 in the Central. That'll keep them afloat in the division, but they'd have to be complete crap not to do so....But they are just not as good as you make them out to be.....For real....

Our 1-2 will be Sheets and Capuano. 3 spot is in between Suppan and Bush. Vargas, though nothing great, will eat up plenty of innings. For sure I think that the Brewers rotation top to bottom is the best in the NL Central.

Seems like Capuano's earned the opening day start....Sheet's will come up sore before the end of spring training.....Seems like that kid Gallardo should at least get a shot for the fifth spot....

Every year about this time, we are told by some baseball "expert" from Chicago how the Cubs best hitters won't be letting anyone else in the NL Central carry their jocks and such. Where does it ever get them? For real? Even their 2003 season can be attributed mostly to dominant pitching. There are just as many questions on the Cubs team as anybody's. Will Prior ever pitch well again, much less stay healthy? Will Carrie Wood's shoulder finally tear completely? Will Derek Lee be able to repeat the kind of year he had in '05? Or will he resort back to a .270 hitter? Which Aramis Ramirez will show up? The slug who dogs it around the bases, or the guy who finished strong last year? Will Soriano work out in center field? Will he be a liability on defense? Is Jaques Jones happy? Who will play left field? What if Zambrano got hurt? The rotation would be ...well...aweful. Is Lou the guy who can handle the circling sharks that are the Chicago Media?
