Endorsements You Don't Want
Barry Bonds spoke up for Rose and McGwire:
"I congratulate Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn for their induction. But I also think McGwire and Pete Rose should be in Cooperstown," said Bonds, who was in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for the Juan Marichal Golf Classic.
I'm sure that's going to change minds. It's like Michael Myers endorsing Jason Voorhees for the camp counselor hall of fame.
Juan Marichal Golf Classic?
Do they hit each other over the head with golf clubs after the 18th hole?
If so, I call dibs on Barry.....I'll warm up my 9 iron :)
how is Rose getting attached to Mcgwire like this (I've seen it elsewhere)? Rose broke a specific baseball rule whose specific punishment is currently being enforced. He is not eligible for the Hall because of that. He's a relentless self-promoter and attention whore on top of that.
McGwire has become a victim of selective outrage, for possibly taking illegal supplements, and refusing to talk to the media anymore.
Not similar at all.
A victim? I think it's laughable that people like you want to afford him the 'proof beyond a reasonable doubt' stuff when the last time I checked, baseball is not a court of law. All of this stuff is the court of public opinion, and an overwhelming majority of people thought he made a complete ass of himself in front of Congress. If he acted like a man in front of the nation, forgiveness would have been forthcoming. But then again, steroids shrink the testes, don't they?
And if you are OK with McGwire, then explain to me what the difference is between him and anyone who uses greenies, coke, or anything else illegal to improve their performance. There is no difference. If you're in , get all in. Otherwise, you're being a hypocrite.
Spoken by a man who himself will probably have trouble getting into The Hall despite his records. Yeah, that's probably just Barry trying to build votes for Barry by making people rethink about how unfair it is to keep some guys out.
The man (McGwire) may not have garnered votes by doing what he did in front of Congress, but we are convicting him (and keeping him out of the Hall of Fame) because of what we think. During the time he was blasting balls left and right we were all rooting him on. He didn't fail any drug test (if any were given) during that time, so there is no proof of wrongdoing. He deserves to be in the HOF, and unless Bonds fails a test and gets suspended or worse, gets a conviction, then he too deserves to be there. As far as Rose, he's paid his price. Reinstate him and put him in on the ballot as well...they all deserve to be there.

I, for one, was not rooting him on. Does anyone remember what a jerk he was during the home run chase? A defensive, condescending jerk is what I remember, and it took Sammy's shtick to humanize the guy even a tiny bit (not that Sammy's any less guilty). Like I said before, we are not prosecutors and he doesn't need to be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt unless it's a court of law. Where does common sense come into play? This is the court of public opinion and he convicted himself at those hearings. And since he's not here to "talk about the past," I'll gladly forget about that season, and if I do, the rest of his career is nowhere near HOF worthy. The only victims here are the kids who believed he did this "naturally."
If Pete Rose is ever to be allowed into the line to get into the Hall, there is no way he can come in before Shoeless Joe Jackson. No way.
People seem to forget that besides his home runs, McGwire just wasn't that good of a ballplayer.
Amen, and then they want to play armchair defense attorney on top of that. Save it for the people stuck at Gitmo, who are actually entitled to it......
I agree witth Mike. But just once...
"... besides his home runs, McGwire just wasn't that good of a player."
Um, gee, that's much like saying without his scoring, Michael Jordan didn't belong on an NBA court.
If you think McGwire used illegal performance-enhancing drugs and therefore shouldn't be in the Hall, that's one thing. [I happen to think he did, but don't particularly care; I understand that others care far more and respect that stance, though I do not share it.]
If you that that McGwire wasn't one solid season (and apparently, one PR flub in front of Congress) away from being an inner-circle HoF player, that's entirely different, and objectively inaccurate. (As a test, give someone the career batting lines for five Hall of Fame 1Bs and McGwire, without the names. Ask them which guy they'd rather have.)
Subbie-
Please pick a better comparison. That's ridiculous.
Even if you took away MJ's scoring, he was still one the best defensive players of all time. Can't quite say that about Big Mac, can you? I didn't think so...
Hell, put em all in. Who really cares anyway? Can Ty Cobb be kicked out for being a racist cracker? Probably not. I'm not convinced character flaws should keep people out, just please don't try to paint him as a victim who didn't know what he was doing to his body. But realize that you gotta be all in with that stance, and OK with anyone who ever cheated, regardless of what they used. Many of these same people will be there ready to crucify the Elijah Dukes of the world. Ugh...
