Jim Leyland and Joe Girardi each win Manager of the Year, as expected. Leyland took a long term loser to the World Series, while Girardi guided a bunch of rookies to wild card contention. A great job by both men. Girardi loses his job, but becomes the first manager with a losing record to win the award.

Girardi's also probably the first winner of the award to lose his job despite being good enough to earn that award. I wonder how many questions the Marlins front office will have to deal with concerning their firing of Joe, after this.

ESPN mentions that Davey Johnson won the award the year he got fired from the Orioles.

Don't forget Davey Johnson, who couldn't get along with his owner, either. He got run out of Baltimore after 1997, when he won the award. Of course, that worked out for Baltimore perfectly and they've been a powerhouse in the AL East ever since.

What, no one's going to mention Davey Johnson?
