Deal in the Works
Ed Price reports that the Yankees and Tigers are working on a deal for Gary Sheffield:
An official with one of the teams involved, who requested anonymity because he didn't want to jeopardize the negotiations, said the Tigers were "very interested" in acquiring Sheffield and had had multiple conversations about a deal in the past two days.
It was unclear what the Yankees would be getting in return, though the official said the Yankees were seeking "pitching, but that could mean starting or relief."
If the Tigers are really down on Bonderman, he's the pitcher I'd want. But I doubt the Yankees will turn up their nose at prospects. The question is, how much will other teams bid up Sheffield's services. Cleveland may be in the mix, which would make for an interesting bidding war between the two AL Central rivals. If the Indians can't land Gary, they might as well make Detroit pay a high price.

Mike and Chris announced that Buster Olney reports
Red Sox may have winning bid for Matsuzaka. Olney on Espn says from some MLB sources, but not confirmed.
Bid to have been $35-40 million.
If the Tigers make that deal they are freaking crazy. I can only hope this is some BS NY-centric rumor.
One. Bonderman is 24 years old. Improving every year, in pretty much every category. He is a horse.
Two. Sheffiled is old. Sheffield is a dick. I know he might behave for Leyland, but what is Sheffiled going to do for this team? He's a rightie. Just like Mags, Monroe and Thames. They need lefty power. Plus he is coming off a major wrist injury in his late thirties.
I'd take a flyer on him, but I wouldn't give up ANYBODY on the Major League roster for him.
The deal makes sense -- the Tigers need a middle-of-the-order bat, the Yankees need pitching and Detroit has it to spare. However, the Tigers would have to think twice about helping one of the top teams in the AL; a stronger Yankee team would hurt their playoff prospects.
However, if Dombrowski either (a) has a pitcher the Yanks value more highly than he does -- possibly Bonderman, or (b) feels he has young pitching to spare, then I could see the trade happening.

I understand trepidation dealing with an older player coming off an injury that sidelined him for most of the season but these numbers are awfully impressive. Attitude aside, the guy comes to play every day. Right now, there is no Tiger on the roster that approaches this type of production.
I'm sorry. Maybe I missed something. Did they come up with a cure for cancer in Detroit?
Hmmm...I have heard that Gammons was saying Shef to the Cubs this morning on Mike and Mike.
It's a done deal now and I give Thanks to the heavens the Tigers didn't give up Bonderman. They did give up their top pitching prospect - Umberto Sanchez - and two other minor league pitchers. ESPN.com has the full story.
