The Two They Kept
Dontrelle Willis pitches 8 solid innings, giving up just one unearned run as Florida goes into the bottom of the 8th tied with the Mets at one. They load the bases on a hit and two walks by Heilman for Miguel Cabrera. The offensive star clears the bases with a double, although the third run scored when Lo Duca couldn't hold on to the ball. It's 4-1 Marlins going to the top of the ninth.
Update: Borowski retires the side in order in the 9th as the Marlins take 2 of 3 from the Mets to stay in the Wild Card race. With his 2 for 3 tonight, Cabrera now has a .429 OBA and a.557 slugging percentage.

The Marlins ended up winning and the Reds are down 2-0. If the Reds lose, the Marlins will be to within four of the wild card. What sort of effect on the baseball industry would Florida, with a $15 million payroll, making the playoffs have? Will teams start to invest more money in scouting and development as opposed to overpaying average free agents simply on the basis of being "established"?
If the Marlins keep this team in tact, I think they'll enter 2007 as perhaps the best team in the NL.

Maybe. But overpaying FA's paved the way in FLA, now and in the past. They got talent when they moved Delgado, LoDuca etc. Did the same when they broke up world series winning teams. The Marlins will keep the team in tact, but there a decent chance the Mets add Zito. In which case they enter 07 best in the NL hands down.
