Who do the Red Sox really need? Why they are doing so good, is they have what they need for every aspect of the game. I would be surprised to hear a problem about the players. Youkilis and Loretta are doing great for wat we thought they would be doing in preseason. Kudos to Epstein and the Red Sox for building a well balanced team.
as far as needing a starter, i think the red sox realized that waiting to see what they can get from some combination of wells, wakefield, and clement is probably just as good, if not better than what they could have gotten out there. i tend to agree
They have a balanced team, but injuries and poor performances have left them a bit shy of pitching, so I expect theo was working the phones trying to find another solid starting option.
However, I think they can win with what they've got (especially if Boomer comes back strong OR Clement experiences a resurrection) so I expect that they didn't feel a pressing need to get a deal done. They dealt a lot of good prospects in the offseason, and I'm glad the farm system didn't take any more hits now, especially with only dubious returns available.
The best way to match Cory Lidle was to do nothing.
The odds are Wake or Wells or Clement are enough to eek out the rest of the season without disrupting what is working.
That's what I feared: moving Lowell or Loretta or Youk for an arm that might not work out. Who knows what Trot's injury might have done to any potential deals?
they did make a move... they traded two roster spots for Wells and Clement. Not bad.
This way they can keep being the best defensive team in the league.
DER doesn't agree on that last thought.
