Penmanship

Nick Piecoro notes that despite a poor performance by Julio yesterday, the Arizona bullpen is pitching well.

Lost in the ugliness of Jorge Julio's ninth-inning giveaway on Sunday was the admirable performance of the Diamondbacks bullpen of late.

Entering the ninth inning, the relievers had given up only four runs this homestand, striking out 24 and walking seven.

Going back further, to the end of the month long slump on July 7th, both the starters and bullpen have allowed just a .302 OBA. The team is 10-3 in that stretch.

Speaking of bullpens. The Padres completed a deal with the Cubs for Scott Williamson. They shipped over two minor league pitchers. I am looking for a lot of deals to take place before next Mondays deadline. I'm even thinking the Red Sox might trade Trot Nixon or Willy Mo Pena for some pitching help. I also read that Julian Tavarez & Rudy Seanez have been asked about by an NL team. Go figure, I think Theo should lose those two as fast as he can. The AAA arms have had much better results so far this season.

The success of the entire NL West seems to rely almost entirely on their bullpen; with so little offense, the Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Padres all seem to win when their bullpens are amazing and lose when their bullpens aren't.
