Can't Throw a Ball

Tied at five in the top of the tenth, the Marlins get a runner to second with 1 out, and the Orioles decide to walk Miguel Cabrera. Todd Williams throws a lollipop too close to the strike zone, and Cabrera is ready. He lines it into center to drive in the go-ahead run.

There's a small but very vocal Marlins contingent at the game. You can hear them on the broadcast cheering for the Fish.

Update: The Fish win 8-5 as they score two more in the top of the 10th. They've now won 10 of their last 11 and 14 of 18. The Marlins head to New York in what should be a fun series as Master and Pupil face off for the first time.

I was at Thurs O's-Marlins game. First, with a 4 run lead in the 9th O's L. Hawkins and closer C. Ray blow it with Ray giving up back to back homers.
then in the 10th O's T. Williams falls down fielding H. Ramirez's bunt when a good throw would have gotten Ramirez. Then with the runner now on second, just as you described it, Williams with 3 balls on M. Cabrera, gets a ball 4 sign from catcher R. Hernandez and with the catcher moving outside, Williams throws a blooper out over the plate that Cabrera smashes for a single to plate the go-ahead run. If that is big league pitching, then something is wrong. The last time I saw anything like this, George Kell was in his last big league season for the O's and on an intentional walk pitch, Kell threw his bat out and knocked in a run from 3rd vs the Yanks.

i always wondered why someone didn't do that

the reason it doesn't happen more often is becasue the batter has to be inside the batters box when he swings.
If it's close enough, you can go for it. I've even heard of guys taking empty swings to tempt the pitcher to try and pitch to them.
