Winning Despite the Walks

Doug Davis pitched his second good game in a row, if you look at runs allowed. Over his last two starts, he's allowed just one run in 12 1/3 innings, despite walking eight and giving up nine hits. When I get the situational stats tomorrow morning I'm going to be very curious to see how he's doing with men on base over these two games. The Brewers defeat the Giants 7-4.

One of the things about today's game...the last inning he pitched shouldn't have taken as long as it did. He got two groundballs in a row to Koskie at third, and he booted them both; one of them was hit pretty hard right at him and was (wrongly, in my opinion) scored as a hit. That means he really only should have allowed 6 men on base in 6 innings, and may have been able to go 7 if not for Koskie...not too bad.

Looking through the play by play, Davis really only had one other messy inning. In the fourth he (smartly) pitched around Alou to walk him, then gave up a single and another walk to load the bases. I don't think he's going to strike out 208 people again, but I do think he's going to be an above average starter this year. I think his upcoming start at Petco Park could be where he finally puts everything back together. Now, if Sheets can get back to some semblence of his old self, and I do think last night will prove to be an anomaly, Milwaukee could be right in it come September. Hell, even Dave Bush has been pretty damn impressive, posting a 3.86 era with a sub-1 whip; besides 2 abysmal starts vs. the cards and cubbies, he's been downright dominant.

Three on the tree for the Crew. The key to that last post is no mention of Capuano who tossed a wonderful shutout in Wrigley last Sunday. He's up there in WHIP and also will strikeout 200, maybe even 220-240 this year. He has proven to be the ace of the staff this season. He's 6 for 6 in quality starts. Once Sheets quits saying you can't "throw hard every day," they have a great 1-4 rotation. 5 is now a question mark because of Ohka's shoulder injury. It'll be up to either Ben Hendrickson, who has been good in Triple-A or perhaps back to Dana Eveland to suck up those starts for a little way if Ohka doesn't need surgery, or permanently if he does.

Even more amazing, the Crew is winning despite their horrid defense so far. Leading the league in jacks is helping negate that though.

Yeah I realize Capuano has been their best pitcher...I don't know how I forgot to mention him. I went back to reword some stuff and deleted his part...whoops.

Interesting info about their minor league starters, I don't know much about the Crew's farm. Even with an uncertain fifth starter, though, that 1-4 should be enough to at least keep Milwaukee in the hunt. But it definately looks like it might be tough for an NL Central team to win the wildcard this year...there's a lot of talent in that division and I wouldn't be surprised to see them beat each other out of the 4th playoff slot. Then again, the rest of the NL looks pretty weak...so who knows.

The way they are going, they should ONLY have those 4 teams in the playoffs. . . lol. You may be right. I'm guessing that they will have the WC team. The Cubs are starting to fall off pace and with pittsburgh already sitting in a lawn chair in the cellar, those two teams should suck up enough losses to let the others in. if that makes sense. . .

I coached Chris Capuano in High School,he was so fun to watch with runners on first,it seemed liked he picked off more runners and had the best move to first than anybody i saw,it was like Softball you were better off just staying on the bag.Chris seems to have a better move to first now, something i thought would be impossible to improve on.My son found a shirt in Cooperstown that fits Capuano perfectly which said on the front"Thou Shalt Not Steal"
