You Gotta Have Heart

The Oakland Athletics demonstrated how the heart of the order should bat today. Chavez, Thomas and Crosby combined to go six for 14 with two homers and eight RBI in the 10-3 romp over the Angels. The 3-4-5 hitters entered the game with overall weak stats, batting a combined .213 with a poor OBA and slugging percentage.

Update: There was a fight in the game between Kendall and Lackey. That's one way to get the opposition starter out of the contest.

When it rains it pours. Angels on the wrong side of two strange and bad unpire calls this week. Last Saturday, Angels SP Kelvim Escobar is warned after hitting A.J. Pierzynski, and Angel manger wants to know "why the warning?" Umpire claims there is well documented animosity between Escobar and Pierzynski. This comes as news to Escobar, Piersynski, Scioscia and just about everyone else.
Today, Scioscia wonders out loud if all a batter has to do to get a pitcher out of the game is rush the mound. Scioscia calls the umpire decision to throw Lackey out of the game "a joke."
When the Angels are playing well, their lack of power is barely noticed because their pitching and defense is so good. When they are slumping, the lack of power is magnified. A five game losing streak at home is no way to start road trip that takes them to Detroit, Toronto and Chicago.
