Barfield Replaces Loretta

Josh Barfield (son of Jesse) is the new second baseman for the Padres, and Ducksnorts couldn't be happier:

Middle infielder with gaps power and maturity beyond his years? In the words of Galahad, “He says they’ve already got one.”

In the words of yours truly, now we’ve got two.

I'm not has high on Greene as that Padres fan, but San Diego middle infield looks set for a number of years.

Baseball Musings is conducting a pledge drive in March. Click here for details.

If I recall correctly, the biblical king David was the son of Jesse. ;)

Aw, man. I was hoping for Bellhorn to resurrect his career.

It was pitiful to see him get booed out of Boston, when only a year earlier he was the best second-baseman in the AL.

I really hoped the same. The Bell is one of my favorite players ever. Hopefully he gets to go somewhere to play, but maybe Sandy'll keep him around.

Bellhorn could very well end up playing 3b for the Padres if Castilla plays as well as I expect him to.

But guys, you have to admit, with two middle infielders in their early twnties, the Padres look to be pretty solid up the middle for a long time. Hopefully. This is good news for Padre fans. I'm still disappointed, though, that Burroughs never panned out.
Now, if only they can figure out their starting pitching.........

Bellhorn was never the best second baseman in any league. Please.

I also hope Bellhorn ends up at 3rd. He's gotta be better than Castilla offensively, and Vinny's defense has been pretty bad recently too. Bellhorn, from what I recall, is adequate defensively at 3rd.

who cares about bellhorn!? he should never be given another start as long as he lives.

Damn, what did he do to you? Spit in your hot dog? All Bellhorn does, admittedly, is draw walks and hit homeruns (and he is a good baserunner, too). Those are three more things than Vinny Castilla is capable of. And Castilla was one of the five worst defensive third basemen in baseball last year, so he can't even claim that advantage.
