The Voice of Saturday Baseball

Curt Gowdy passed away today. When I first started watching baseball, I remember Curt calling the games for NBC. He and Tony Kubek were the announcers on Saturday afternoon and in the post season. The thing I remember most about their broadcasts from the early 1970s was the use of the split screen to show both the batter/pitcher matchup and the pitcher/runner on first battle.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Curt Gowdy is one of the overlooked greatest announcers ever. He could tell you everything you needed to know about the game with out intruding on the game or trying to make you think he was smart. He called baseball, football, and basketball, as well as all his years on The American Sportsman. A class act all around. He will be missed.

Curt Gowdy did a great job. His voice captured the essence of the game of baseball. He and Tony Kubec were a great team they were perfect for calling the national televised games. The players and games they covered were a special time in baseball history.

Thanks for sharing the great game with all of us.

Sincere condolences to the Gowdy Family.

I'm too young to know of Curt's NBC broadcasts, but I understand that his legacy will go down in baseball history. When listening to clips of his calls, you realize how much of a play-by-play pioneer he really was.

Gowdy seemed to be a fine person and decent guy, but he was not a great announcer. What I remember most from the NBC game of the Week broadcasts is that he didn't know anything about players that didn't play in Boston, New York, Baltimore, Oakland or Cincinnati. It was obvious that he didn't research the other teams as well. It's almost sad to watch an ESPN Classic broadcast of an old All Star game and hear him call the Pirates right fielder Bob Clemente.

I may misrecall, but I could swear the Topps card in at least one of the sets from 1966-1969 called him "Bob" Clemente.
