D.R. Beats P.R

The Caribbean Series got underway this afternoon with an eleven inning, 5-4 victory by the Dominican Republic over Puerto Rico.

Update: I'm watching the Venezuela-Mexico game, and the players have corporate names on their backs where player names would normally appear in the majors. At first, I thought all the Mexican players were named Corona!

Hey Pinto --

who's carrying the series on the TV?

In New York we're getting it on the YES Network. I didn't notice if they're carrying it as it happens; I'm seeing it at night. Announcers for Dominican/Puerto Rico are Billy Sample (who's pretty good) and Jim Leyritz; unfortunately Sample has been beset by audio glitches. Announcers for Mexico/Venezuela are Cookie Rojas (seems good so far) and Victor Rojas; I wonder if they're actually at the game; the audio sounds overdubbed because there's no ambient noise -- it's weird!

The starter for Caracas, Gonzalez, has a surprising quirk in his windup; his knee hits his glove arm.

About the corporate names on the back. Yeah that's something normal in winter ball. Back home (Dominican Republic) all teams wear the name and sometimes de logo of a company who sponsors them during the year. It is a lot of fun to watch big name players from the majors playing just for love of the game.
