It's About Time!

The Yankees are thinking about moving Jeter or A-Rod to centerfield:

Torre said he has considered the merits of converting either shortstop Jeter or AL MVP Rodriguez, who has been playing third base since joining the Yankees, but has not raised the subject with either of his star players.

"We've thought about it," Torre said. "We just haven't made a commitment to that. We haven't broached it with the shortstops."

They should have moved Jeter to center when they traded for A-Rod.

So how about this? The Yankees move Jeter to center (he's the best fly chaser), A-Rod back to short and sign Bill Mueller to play third? Whoever DHs or Robinson Cano would be the least productive hitter in the lineup.

I love it! There are a million decent, cheap, 3B options out there for the taking: Koskie, Chad Tracy, Casey Blake, Mueller. I'm sure that any of these guys could be had for a live arm and FOB.

Of course, this may be a negotiating tactic with Johnny Damon.

Check over at Bronx Banter - apparently Torre was on Danza's show (this morning?) and said that it was a case of a reporter taking a thought & running with it, and really making too much of just a 'thinking out loud' type of situation by Torre...

Controversy over. ;-)

Does anyone think that Bill Mueller can hit a lick outside of Fenway?

Posted by: Steve Lombardi at November 29, 2005 11:52 AM

Mueller has hit pretty well outside of Fenway. He won't have much power, but he can get on base.

Joe Randa is still out there, too.

If his reputation as a great teammate is true, then he is exactly what Torre needs.

I think the Yankees should move Jeter to CF, Sheffield to 3B, Cano to SS, Alex to 2B, Matsui to RF, Giambi to LF, Posada to 1B and sign a good catcher. Unless they want to move Randy Johnson to catcher, which could work out also.

As a Sox fan, I hope they don't do it. It makes perfect sense, if only they can get over their sensitivity about forcing The Captain to move (which should have happened after the A-Rod trade). It'd strengthen their defense, and give them a lot of options for patching the offense. It'd also break Scott Boras' tiny little heart, and we'd hate to see that happen.

I am surprised Nomar has not come up in any discussions.

Why not Nomar at third? Take a look at this lineup:
Jeter - CF
Nomar - 3B
A-Rod - SS
Sheffield - RF
Giambi - 1B
Matsui - LF
Posada - C
Cano - 2B
?? - DH

You could play anyone you wanted at DH, and still have the best offense in baseball, and actually a solid defensive team.

And there is no way that Giambi could play LF - are you serious?

Never listen to any remark by a red sox fan. They don;t how to win or loose graciously.
I agree with Bob above. he sounds pretty smart to me. The rest of it is just a bunch of "spit"

interesting that Torre refers to them as "the shortstops" in the quote.

Tom Verducci mentioned Nomar and the Yankees last week but suggested Nomar play centerfield
ttp://yankees.mostvaluablenetwork.com/trades-rumors-moves/centerfield-rumors-pt-6-nomar-garciaparra
"Garciaparra still can hit, though probably not at the MVP-caliber level he did in his glory days. He's also very athletic, in the way of Robin Yount, which is why I don't think it's crazy for the Yankees to consider him as a center fielder. George Steinbrenner always has liked Garciaparra, and don't you think he'd love to have Jeter, A-Rod and Nomar on the same team?"

I think that Nomar would be a much better option at 3b with Jeter in CF, but I am not sure that they would ever move Jeter out there. If they would not move him out of SS for A-Rod (a far superiour defender), I doubt that they would do it for Nomar.

Move a Gold Glove shortstop? Ridiculous! Almost as ridiculous as giving him the Gold Glove award (TWICE!!!) in the first place.

(Tongue firmly in cheek.)

I promised a Red Sux fan friend of mine that Nomar would be a Yankee someday. But why would you sign someone and then move him and two other players to new positions? Might as well do as Bob suggested and shift everyone around.

Nomar for CF would be fine. But Jeter in CF would not be great even if he could handle it eventually, ARod back to SS improves that position but then weakens 3B (he did play gold glove defense there this season).

And Nomar hasn't shown he can stay healthy to play any position at all (I see him as a nice DH some place). Bubba Crosby or Jason Michaels should be their CF for 2006.

Alex Rodriguez was below average defensively at third base this year.

Bob was being a fool- just so all of you people know. check out yankees.com and read the article- you'll understand everything then. I dont think they will move anyone. Jeters the captain (hasn't played any other positions)and Arod has already moved (is good where he is). Nomar might be a possibility. Arod plays good defense- maybe not error free, but he has a great arm and makes some spectacular plays. Unfortunately they will need to do something creative or drastic, so anything is possible. This is because bullpen options are shrinking and so are centerfield options. You might see a trade somewhere that will help the Yankees. I applaud the Yanks for keeping Cano and Wang, and hope that those prospects stay with the Yankees for 2006.
