Samson Grows his Hair

The Daily News posted an article on how the Mets might benefit from a Marlins fire sale, but I hadn't seen this bit of information before:

Marlins president David Samson, the son of owner Jeffrey Loria's ex-wife, has taken over control of the club from Loria and ordered the payroll be slashed by 25-30%, with speculation it could be as low as $40 million in 2006, an organization source said.

I keep seeing that Loria can't be reached for comment in other stories, and what little is coming out of the Marlins front office is from Samson. Does anyone have more information on this?

All I have to add is that this isn't the first time we've seen Loria dismantle a team and remain silent while doing it.

This is wild speculation on my part, but Samson being the son of Loria's ex-wife is a relatively new development. I believe they were divorced, or at least started the process, this year.

While Loria's pockets have never been as deep as other owners, the rumor always was that the bulk of Mr. Loria's fortune came from the now ex-Mrs. Loria. I don't know how the particulars of the team's ownership work, but I wonder if the end of the marriage has more to do with this than we realize.

Sorry for all the tabloid-like speculation, but that's my guess. Samson's involvement in the front office was always a bit of a question mark. Now it appears that his mommy might have more influence over the whole thing than we previously knew.

This is ridiculous. The Marlins did dismantled after '97, and lost a ton of attendance because of it, not to mention respect among baseball fans. Now they're doing it again?! You've GOT to be kidding me! Twice now... I don't know how long it'll be before I trust their ownership again...

I wish they would deal their some of talent to padres we need a 3rd baseman, a few pitchers, and a leadoff hitter.

Devon,

FYI, this is different ownership. Back then it was Wayne Huizenga, now it's Loria. Loria never did it to the Marlins, he was too busy eroding the remaining fan base of the Montreal Expos, selling them back to baseball for a profit, then getting the keys to another franchise (the Marlins) from his friend Bud Selig so he could do the whole thing over again.

Not that I'm biased or anything ;)
