Changing Signals

It appears that Doug Eddings is going to change his signals:

The umpire who made the controversial dropped third strike call in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series said yesterday he "absolutely" made the right call, but admitted he was wrong in the manner in which he called it.

"I think I've got to change my mechanic a little," Doug Eddings said upon arriving at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, Calif. Eddings' raised, clenched fist for a strike call is similar to a traditional out call. "That's why I feel bad. I should have given a safe sign."

Eddings admitted he called a dropped third strike more emphatically earlier in the game.

That's better than what he said in the press conference last night. I wonder why there are no standards for how an umpire calls a strike?

Wow, how loud will the boos be in Minute Maid when they announce the umps?

This makes much more sense, and almost seems like an apology. He hits the nail on the head when he says that he should have made a definitive call one way or the other. He should have said this in the postgame conference, but hey, better late than never.

Maybe he should do the Riverdance on a strikeout. Emphatic and unmistakable.

The raised clenched fist is not SIMILAR to the out call, it IS the out call. He doesn't need to change his mechanics at all. He just needs to apply them correctly, as he did earlier in the game, and in games past. His mechanics were unmistakable to everyone in the stadium; he just used the wrong ones.

What is it about people in the field of professional baseball that makes them absolutely incapable of admitting to a mistake?

Didn't ever watch the Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielson?

I think Tim McCarver was better in Naked Gun than he's been doing the ALCS.

I imagine there won't be any boos at all in Minute Maid when they announce the umps. The boos at Angel Stadium might be deafening, though...

No need to change signals like he said he was consistant throughout the game. First two strikes on a no swing Eddings used a clunched fist and yelled strike. On a swinging strike on strike 1 and 2 he did and said nothing. On a strike 3 swinging he waved his arm then did the clunched fist. On a ball that hit the dirt strike three swinging he would wave his arm then wait for a tag by the catcher before he would clunch his fist. what is significant about this is that the clunch fist after a tag meant the clunch fist was a signal for an out. And the porpouse for the wave of the arm was used to indicate a strike three call. The ball hitting the dirt on a strike three happened 3 other times during the game with all 3 times Eddings getting in position to make a call by clunching his fist after tag by catcher. The wave of the arm is used to differentiate a swinging third strike call with a clunching fist out call. Since his original call was wave of the arm called third strike and clunching of the fist out the batter was therefore out and Eddings consistant. No need for a change. Eddings is therefore a liar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more thing to clarify. Eddings made the call as if the ball didnt hit the dirt like he did consistantly with all other swinging strike 3 calls. If Doug Eddings, #88 who will be in tonights game, felt it hit he dirt he would have delayed his clunched fist until after a tag by the catcher. Now come on people this is black and white. Forget all of the other garbage Eddings changed his call and thats a fact!!!!!!!
