The Yankees are down 2-0 in the fifth thanks to a homer by Bill Hall. The Brewers shortstop also has a double in the game and has raised his slugging percentage to .527. Jeter and Womack have the only two hits for the Yankees off Ben Sheets.

When do the Yanks start the fire sale? I figure they can probably find takers for Gordon, Sheffield, Matsui and Posada, and pending performances up to the All-Star break, might even be able to find a home for Mussina, perhaps an outside shot at Brown? If they mean business, give up the ghost truly and send Mariano on his way. This year's gone, and if they stand pat, they're only older and more tired next year. Try to trade what you can now for youth, lose as many contracts as possible, and spend the Yankee way in 2007 or 2008. It's the only chance the Yanks have at avoiding another swirl around the toilet a la the late 1980's.
um...they're two games under .500. Fire sale? Steinbrenner? Save us the drama, Yankees fans.
Hey, two games under is good for seven games out of first in the division, 6 out of the WC with 4 teams in between. BaseballProspectus' postseason odds report gives them a 5% chance of making the playoffs. Maybe they have a run in them this year, but really what I'm getting at isn't all that dramatic. It's more that they're old, and not getting younger. And more so, they're boring, and playing a joyless brand of baseball. You think I expect a fire sale? God no, not with Steinbrenner. What I expect is for them to trade Wang and Cano for a $21 million half-season Clemens rental. But if you don't see any parallel with the Frankenteam out there now and the Frankenteam of the late 80's, your memory doesn't stretch that far. I'd rather watch them lose with youth for a couple of years and try to build a core like they did in the 90's. Which was really my point.
