Guillen Goes East

The Anaheim Angels have rid themselves of Jose Guillen, trading him to the Montreal/Washington team for Juan Rivera and Maicer Izturis. The Angels get a couple of younger players and Bowden gets a good power hitter for the middle of the lineup. Guillen is younger than I thought; he'll be 29 in 2005. He's only two years older than Rivera (although River's seasonal age will be 26 in 2005). It's unlikey that Maicer is going to turn into his brother. Cesear is only 7 months older, and he's already played four major league seasons. Seems like a decent trade for Washington.

Yup, good for the Washington Nationals until he becomes a cancer in the clubhouse.

(As a former Expos fan, it won't be hard to root against the Nationals with a name like that. The vote by the other owners was postponed a couple days ago? Looks good on Bud.)

I like what radio announcers have said about Juan Rivera.

It's hard to see how this replaces the role the Angels' 2nd-best hitter had, though, unless his negatives were really that big. I also gotta wonder about Izturis #2... did he and Cesar have different mothers or something? They're only 7 months apart and have different hometowns listed.

Hmm, Rivera looks as good as Guillen to me, and is younger and cheaper. I'd a lot rather pay Izzy $300K than Guzman $4M, and I can't believe he'd be any worse.

Isn't there something fishy about Maicer being only 7 months younger than his brother? You do the math and tell me.

I assume they are half-brohters.

Rivera had a great second half; this is a tremendous deal for the Angels, who get a similar player with less cost and less headache and more upside. And I'm glad the Mets didn't get stuck with Guillen, who seems like a highly unreliable commodity.
