As some of the commentors to this site indicated last night, MLB has taken the the Spiderman advertising off the bases. One thing that disappointed me about the first movie was that they didn't use the Spiderman theme from the old Saturday morning cartoon. The commissioner even gets mentioned!

Is he strong? Listen, Bud!
He's got radioactive blood.

Which brings me to this Bud Selig quote:

"It isn't worth, frankly, having a debate about," commissioner Bud Selig told The Associated Press in Oakland before the Yankees-Athletics game.

"I'm a traditionalist," he said. "The problem in sports marketing, particularly in baseball, is you're always walking a very sensitive line. Nobody loves tradition and history as much as I do."

Now that I'm no longer rolling on the floor laughing (expansion, wild card, realignment, interleague play, contraction), all I have to say is, "What a schmuck!" Bud, it's okay for baseball to want to make money through advertising. But don't try something like this, then try to say you're on the fan's side. It's very clear to all of us that the only thing you care about is the bottom line. According to Doug Pappas' counter, there's 968 days left in Selig's term. I going to have a big party when it goes to zero.

The day Bud Selig leaves the commissioner's post will be a great day for baseball...would be even greater if we were to get a real non-partisan commissioner. It is so ridiculous for an owner to be commissioner. It would be just as bizarre to have Don Fehr as a commissioner. I suppose Bud Selig thought he was acting in best interests of baseball when he canceled the World Series.Guess the days of non-partisan commissioners are over. Know George Steinbrenner would love to be commissioner so he could get rid of that luxury tax.

I saw a picture of the base with the logo, so I am assuming they are made. Assuming I am correct, I wonder if they are going to put them up for sale on EBay or something. Hell, there is some revenue!

They aren't actually that bad looking. My position has moved from somewhat annoyed to mild acceptance. If MLB decides they want to make money this way, I can't see why not. It was done in good taste, for a limited amount of time.

Why doesn't Selig attempt to defend his position? That would lead to an honest debate...not this, well, a few sportswriters don't like it so we're folding our tents and going home. Selig needs to act like he's got a pair.

Actually, if you stick around to the end of the credits of the first Spider-Man movie, they do play the old TV theme song.

Bob Costas for commissioner!

i agree with andrew's comment above, the day bud leaves will be a great day for baseball. i agree with david, that advertising revenue does assist the game of baseball, but please don't touch anything between the white lines.

The Canadian music group Moxy Fruvous did a great a cappella version of the original Spidey theme on their debut album, _Bargainville_ in '91 or so.

What ever happened to rumors about commissioner Bill Clinton?

dcthrowback, it's a slippery slope. this was pretty clearly a testing ground for wide-spread on-field, on-uni, etc advertising in baseball, and it failed, thank god.

Why not kill two birds (so to speak) and ask Bush to take the job?

I feel the ads were a nice idea. Promoting entertainment in entertainment was a good thing to me. Tradition is just another way of doing the same tired crap. I'm glad we have a commish who makes changes and advances the game.

Some idiots would still have 16 teams and insist Brooklyn have the Dodgers. Yawn, and the DH has ruined the game, right? That Red Sox/Yankees ALCS was terrible to watch, wasn't it? Damn the wildcard anyway. Who wants to see sellouts every year for those rivalry series anyway?

You guys gotta get a bit more consistent, and stop having it both ways. MLB attendance is up 15% in April. You whiners can't see the renaissance happening right in front of your face.

"You guys gotta get a bit more consistent, and stop having it both ways."

I think what people are doing is pretty simple: thinking about proposed changes and deciding whether they like it or not. Shockingly, people found the idea of putting advertisements on bases to be in poor taste! What a surprise! I think what you're arguing is that traditionalists should just either accept every single change that comes along or stubbornly disagree with every change that comes along. That, of course, is ignorant. How anyone in their right mind could not simply just tolerate, but actually ENJOY this idea is beyond me. Al strikes again . . .
