Texas Twist

Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram sees Nolan Ryan's move from the Rangers to the Astros as a metaphor for the off-season in Texas:

No, the way to keep Ryan was probably to offer him less, not more. But keep him. Somehow, keep him.

Instead, he'll soon be hooking up with the Astros.

Andy Pettitte. Roger Clemens. Nolan Ryan. Now there's a trifecta for you.

Have two teams in the same state ever been at such different ends of the spectrum in one off-season?

This whole thing is so overstated. Nolan provided nothing for the Rangers beyond some pr appearances and a token look at the Rangers pitchers during spring training. Beyond a symbolic meaning, this move proves nothing. Reeves comments about the Astros just goes to show how ga-ga writers can get about glamorous free agent signings. Writers like this are in need of some perspective.

i don't guess scott and dave are stros fans. but i am!!!! actually, i'd guess we won't exactly see much of nolan cuz georgetown is about 3 hours from houston (driving texas speed, avoiding downtown austin and no traffic in katy) which is lots further than alvin. but it sounds good. the publicity. i just hope it persuades drayton to spend money when the pennant is on the line.
