Matsuzaka Marathon

If you get NESN and you're a Red Sox fan, they're broadcasting a Matsuzaka marathon. They'll have the press conference at 5:00 PM EST, and they just showed footage of Theo showing Dice-K his new locker. His name plate is already up, his uniforms are in place, and he'll be wearing number 18.

Update: Matsuzaka will be dropping the puck at the Bruins game tonight. It's all Matsuzaka, all the time!

The NESN crew just pointed out that the Red Sox home opener is againt Seattle, so if Matsuzaka pitches that game, the first plate appearance could be Dice-K vs. Ichiro.

Update: The news conference is starting with Theo as MC.

Update: Theo's taking his time so his speech can be translated. He just introduced Daisuke and the pitcher is showing off his new jersey and hat.

Update: Theo spoke to the people of Japan, calling Matsuzaka a national treasure and committing the Red Sox to helping him make a successful transition to the US.

Update: It's interesting listening to the conference. Matsuzaka will give about a 60 second answer, and translator reduces it to about 10 seconds.

Update: Matsuzaka gave the right answer to his goal with the Red Sox, helping them win the world series.

Update: No one's asked Daisuke if he throws the gyroball.

Update: Someone just asked if Matsuzaka threw John Henry a gyroball off the mound at Fenway.

Update: Larry Lucchino ended the conference reaching out to Japanese fans, inviting them to visit Fenway. Good luck getting tickets! He also made sure the Japanese people understood that the Red Sox planned for this to be a long term relationship with their country.

Ichiro lays down a bunt in front of home plate, Matsuzaka runs down and fields it, oh no he slips ! he can barely stand up, looks like his groin is hurting. boy, what a bad break for the 100 million dollar man.

Jerk...

Here's hoping for a good start! "18" is his number here in Japan, and the magic number for a pitcher (being the legendary Sawamura's number). He may well be a good as he's touted. I've watched him since his high school days, and I expect him to win 100+ on this contract with a good team (and though I no longer consider myself a Red Sox fan, they are a good team!).

Theo Epstein .......he makes me puke............Dice K is a national treasure my ass....the Sox just spent $103+ million on one player, $36 million on a scrub and what are they giving to Drew???........the end is truely near

The translator provided by Boras was awfully nervous throughout the press conference, they should've gone with the guy who translated for Hideki Okajima.

Please let this guy's elbow explode in short order. Nothing against him, seems like a great guy. But he'll be a huge asset for the Sox, both in popularity in Japan and on the mound. And they got him dirt cheap. That ain't right.

100 million is dirt cheap?

Matsuzaka will make megabucks someday in a contract extension. Just like Ichiro will probably before the end of this season.

Actually ... I'd say Matsuzaka hasn't done too bad for himself. He's tripled his salary without even becoming a free agent!

Dan,
That's messed up, hoping for an injury. That's beyond the pale, dude. You can root for or against any team you want, but rooting for an injury is really, really wrong and makes you an asshole.

Matsukaza seems to bring out the mean in some people, I've been noticing. It's one thing to hope that this works out badly for Boston; I understand, just as I'm crossing my fingers that the Yankees fall into a black hole and go 79-83 this year. But I recoil from actually articulating a wish that Derek Jeter, like, have a leg fall off or something. :/
