Team Offense, Colorado Rockies

The 2023 series on team offense continues with the Colorado Rockies. The Guardians finished tied for fifteenth in the majors and tenth in the National League in 2022 with 4.31 runs scored per game.

This season I am using FanGraphs Roster Resource Depth Charts* as the source of default lineups. That Bud Black batting order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections.   That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.59
  • Probable lineup: 4.55
  • Worst lineup: 4.35
  • Regressed lineup: 4.31

The Rockies are another low spread team, with little difference between their best and worst lineups. While the Rockies default seems off from the LAT, Colorado still captures 83% of the optimum.

The two lineups agree on C.J. Cron at lead-off. The other differences are not that great, as the the order groups the hitters well. For example, the LAT has a number of top lineups with Yonathan Daza, Charlie Blackmon, and Kris Bryant batting 9-1-2, while the Rockies have them 1-2-3. Elehuris Montero and Mike Moustakas bat 7-8 in the LAT, 6-7 in the actual order.

Montero and Ezequiel Tovar have less than a year MLB experience, so take their projections with a grain of salt. Tovar had a great 2022 at AA and AAA. Montero showed good power at AAA in 2022. They could turn out to be good additions to the team.

You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.
