New Faces – Minnesota Twins

The Twins added the following new players to their projected opening day roster according to FanGraphs:

Lopez, the most interesting acquisition of the off-season, slots into the number one slot in the rotation. He might have gone in any slot, however, as the projected ERAs of the starting five range from Lopez’s 3.84 to a high of 4.16. That really should be an effective set of starters if the offense can produce.

Vazquez will be the only member of the starting nine past-prime, but the lineup is not young. Most of the talent is in the 29-30 age range, so this might be the right time for the group to put on an offensive push. The Twins may be planning to platoon Gallo and Taylor. Neither puts up great numbers, but their strengths are totally different, which may lead to the platoon be as much opponent/venue based as left-right.

The Twins’ moves lead one to believe they think of themselves as a “win now” team. The problem is that I don’t see how they’re good enough to win now. It’s possible, if no one else in the division steps up, that they could win 85-88 games and sneak into a division title. But all that will do for them is give them a chance to extend their playoff futility record. There’s no way they’re good enough to compete with the big boys.
