The Adjustor

The Brewers sign pitcher Wade Miley to a one-year, $4.5 million deal with $1.5 million in incentives. This is a fairly low risk, high reward deal for Milwaukee as Miley pitched well the last two seasons, but visited the illjured list three times in 2022.

A look at Miley’s pitch selection over time reveals a player who is constantly adjusting. He started off throwing mostly four and two seam fastballs with a change up and a slider. About mid-way through his career he developed a cut fastball, which replace his two-seam pitch, and started mixing in a curveball more often. Today he is almost entirely cut fastballs and changeups, using the slider when he needs an out. That may be the reason his ERA is much lower than his FIPs over the last two seasons. He gives up hits due to his low K rate. His walk rate is just ok. It appears that in tough situations he can use the slider to get an out and prevent big damage.

He’s a very nice addition to a good pitching staff, and does not break the bank.
