Cuban Replacement

It looks like the Astros are replacing Cuban first baseman Yuli Gurriel with Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu:

The World Series champions have reached a deal with first baseman Jose Abreu, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The former Chicago White Sox standout and 2020 AL MVP will reportedly join Houston on a three-year deal.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman has also reported that Abreu is headed to the Astros. According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, the deal “is expected to be around $60 million.”

Abreu is three years younger than Gurriel, and Gurriel hit poorly in two of his last three seasons. Houston may try to bring him back as a utility man, but at his age versatility may be a thing of the past.

Abreu posted very good WAR values all through his 30s, so sixty million for three years seems like a very reasonable contract. He doesn’t need to be a star, just another very good hitter in a great lineup.
