Clevinger Goes Windy

The White Sox add depth to their starting rotation as they reportedly agree to a deal with Mike Clevinger. It’s tough to gauge the deal right now as there appear to be no details apart from it being a one-year deal.

Clevinger returned from missing 2021 due to Tommy John surgery to pitch twenty three games. His strikeout rate was down and his home run rate was up. Now in his 30s, he probably isn’t the four-WAR pitcher he was at his prime in 2018 and 2019. He should give the White Sox innings at the back of the rotation, and an improvement on his 4.33 ERA from last season would be a bonus. This appears to be a rather low risk signing by Chicago.

Clevinger does carry the baggage of not being a good teammate, as he broke COVID protocols in 2020, prompting his trade from the Indians to the Padres.
