Win, Place, and Showalter

Buck Showalter wins his fourth Manager of the year Award, and becomes the first manager to win with four different teams. It’s his first NL win:

Showalter’s victory for a fourth different club broke the tie he had shared with La Russa. It also marked the first victory for a Mets manager since the BBWAA started voting in 1983. Runners-up in the voting for the Mets were Davey Johnson in 1984 and 1986 and Willie Randolph in 2006.

How Johnson lost the 1984 vote is beyond me.

The race was close, as both Showalter and Dave Roberts tied with eight first place votes. Showalter was the consensus second pick, however, garnering ten second place votes to four for Roberts. Even fifth place Rob Thomson did well, with two first place votes, seven second place votes, and five first place votes.

I’m a bit surprised Showalter won. The Mets put together a good team, built an early 10 1/2 game lead, and wound up a wild card. It seems like Brian Snitker, who brought his team back from that deficit while guiding the top two rookies in the NL through their first season deserved more than a third place finish.

Johnson lost in 1984 because Jim Frey took the Cubs from 5th to 1st while Johnson took the Mets from 6th to 2nd.
