Best Batter Today

Yandy Diaz of the Rays moves into the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with a three four four game against the Astros. He doubles and walks in the 7-3 Tampa Bay victory to take the fifth slot. The Rays clinch a wild card berth, as do the Mariners who beat Oakland 2-1, the Mariners ending their long playoff drought.

In the same game in Houston, Jose Altuve of the Astros posts an 0 for 4 but remains in second place. Yordan Alvarez, his teammate, seems to be recovered from his injury as he goes two for four, both hits doubles, for fourth place. Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers goes one for two with two walks for fourth place in a 10-0 pounding of the Rockies.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees remains at the top of the list as he goes one for two with two walks in a 2-1 Orioles victory. Judge’s home run pace now matches his most likely total for the season, 63 homers. The probability of him hitting at least 62 home runs now stands at 0.78. Judge gains a bit of ground on the idle Luis Arraez in the batting race. Arraez sits at .315, Judge at .314, and I estimate there is a 0.375 probability of Judge finishing ahead of Arraez to win the triple crown.

Veteran Evan Longoria of the Giants posts the best game score of the day, a 74. Longoria hits two home runs in four plate appearances in a 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks. It’s the second year in a row where injuries limited Longoria’s playing time to under 100 games. He still produces power, keeping his isolate power above .200, something he’s done for his entire career.
