Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees picks up one of two New York hits on Saturday to stay in first place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. The Cardinals take the game 1-0 as recently traded Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery pitches five shutout innings for St. Louis. Judge’s pace projects him to 65 home runs, while his Musings Marcels home run rate projects his total at 56. The probability of him hitting at least 62 home runs drops to 0.068.

In the same game, Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals goes two for two with a walk and two doubles, giving him 31 doubles on the season. That move him into second place.

Yordan Alvarez drops to third place after an 0 for 3 with a walk in a game won by the Guardians 4-1. I was at the game, and it was one of the quickest played games I attended in a long time, coming in at 2:30. The fans booed Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman the most, and Altuve made the fans happy by striking out twice. The Guardians peppered the ball around the park for their four runs. I saw a lot more Indians jerseys than Guardian jerseys as I was walking to the game, but it was Myles Straw jersey night, so everyone ended up wearing a Guardians jersey over whatever shirt they donned originally.

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers maintains fourth place as he goes 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly in an 8-3 win over the Padres. The Padres trades were designed to beat teams like Los Angeles so they could win the World Series, but so far that hasn’t happened.

Austin Riley of the Braves rounds out the top five as he goes two for eight with a double and a hit by pitch in the doubleheader against the Mets. The Mets swept the pair, and now lead Atlanta by 5 1/2 games in the NL East.

Jose Barrero (aka Jose Garcia) of the Reds posts the best game score of the day, a 72. His two for four with two home runs helped beat the Brewers 7-5. They were the first home runs of Barrero’s major league career.
