Best Batter Today

Monday saw little action in the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings as the top four, Paul Godlschmidt, Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts, and Aaron Judge did not play on a day with only four games played. Pete Alonso of the Mets, ranked fifth did go one for four with a walk as the Mets downed the Padres 11-5.

Eduardo Escobar of the Mets starred in that game by hitting for the cycle. He hit the triple in the ninth inning to complete the feat:

“This is a great moment. It’s unbelievable,” the 33-year-old third baseman said. “It’s hard hitting the cycle at this level. Today’s a special night for me. Most important is the win.”

The ball from the triple was perched in his locker.

He picked up the hits in increasing order of difficulty, starting with a single, then a double, then a home run in the eighth inning. His four for five on the night earned him a game score of 87, the best by far on the day. Escobar was actually a pretty good cycle candidate, as he leads the majors in triples since the start of the 2019 season.
