Best Batter Today

The top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings get shuffled a bit after Sunday’s games. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals remains on top as he goes two for five in a 5-3, eleven inning win over the Cubs Sunday night.

Bryce Harper moves into second place as he goes two for four with a double, home run, and walk in a 9-7 comeback win over the Angels. Harper’s grand slam in the eighth inning tied the game at six. That might be the quintessential Harper game. For his career he owns 289 doubles, 280 home runs, and 851 walks in 1331 games. Harper passes Mookie Betts of the Dodgers who went 0 for 5 in a 5-4 loss to the Mets in ten innings, another close, exciting game.

Pete Alonso of the Mets helped make that game tense. His double in the eighth tied the game at two. That was his only hit in five trips to the plate. He leads the majors in RBI with 54, close to one per game. Aaron Judge rounds out the top five as he goes one for five in a ten inning, 5-4 win over the Tigers. Judge’s probability of 62 home runs this season stands at 0.0026.

The best game score of the day goes to Yordan Alvarez of the Astros. He misses the cycle by a double with a three for four day, including a hit by pitch for a score of 78. The Astros beat the Royals 7-4. He recently signed a six-year, $115 million extension that will keep him with the Astros through his prime.

It represents the largest contract extension ever for a player whose primary position is designated hitter and guarantees him $26 million per year for the free-agent seasons, according to the outlets.

So far, he’s living up to the contract.
