Best Batter Today

Wednesday brought a very slight shuffling of the top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals extended his hit streak with a single and two walks and remains in first place. St. Louis defeats San Diego 5-2. Mookie Betts of the Dodgers closed the gap a tiny bit as he posts a three for five night with a home run, but the Pirates complete a sweep of the three game series with an 8-4 win.

Ty France of the Mariners goes three for four in a 9-2 Orioles win for third place. He raises his batting average to .355. In a season where offense is down, that ranks third in the AL in a very tight race.

Pete Alonso of the Mets ranks fourth after a walk and a hit by pitch in a 5-0 win over the Nationals. Alonso’s six hit by pitches this season ties him for third in the majors. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians rounds out the top five. He goes 0 for 4 in a 4-0 win over the Royals, but he did drive in a run.

Brendan Rodgers of the Rockies posted the best game score of the day as runs were aplenty in the doubleheader between Miami and Colorado. In game two, Rodgers went three for five with a walk, all three hits home runs. His final dinger, a two-run shot leading off the bottom of the tenth, gave the Rockies a 13-12 victory and a split on the day. That performance earned him a score of 88. His power is not particularly helped by Coors, with a .425 career slugging percentage at home, .418 on the road.
