Bartee Passes

Former outfielder and current Tigers coach Kimera Bartee died suddenly at the age of 49:

“All of us in the Tigers baseball family were shocked and saddened,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a statement. “Throughout his time in our organization as both a player and a coach, Kimera was known as a kind soul but intense competitor who did his best every day to elevate those around him to do great things. While Tigers fans got used to seeing him in the first base coach’s box, Kimera’s impact on our ballclub went far deeper and will be sorely missed.”

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Bartee played in six season in the majors, although his career was pretty much over after his last season in Detroit in 1999. He failed to get a hit in the majors in 2000 and 2001, covering nineteen at bats and 24 PA. He was simply a poor hitter, with a .216/.282/.298 slash line during the height of the steroid era. He did play the outfield well, as his 2.0 defensive rWAR made up for his -1.4 offensive rWAR.

A big part of his hitting problem was strikeouts, collecting 141 K in 473 plate appearances, 30%. While there seems to be a paradox that high strikeout rates often indicate good hitters and pitchers, there is a limit to how high a hitter’s K rate can go. Bartee hit that limit.
