Best Batter Today

Jose Ramirez of the Indians stays atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings without lifting a bat as rain postponed the Reds at Cleveland. That gave Corey Seager of the Dodgers a chance to close the gap as he goes three for five with a double, and now trails Ramirez by less than four points. The Angels won that game 2-1, as Seager’s teammate Justin Turner walked twice to hold third place.

Marcus Semien of the Blue Jays stays hot with a two for four in a 7-4 Astros win. He takes fourth place. His teammate, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.uses a one for four day to replace Mookie Betts in the top five.

Semien is a nice example of how the rating system works. HIs .262/.331/.477 in 2021 slash line is good but not impressive. He’s been a consistently good hitter over his career, and with Oakland played in a home park that hurt offense, so his game scores counted for more. He played well in the post-season last year, so that gave him a boost, and because he played late, he received less of an off-season decline. Over his last 16 games he’s been hot. So a steady player on a hot streak means as of this moment he’s one of the best in the game.

Freddie Freeman of the Braves posted a perfect night in a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. Freeman went three for three with a home run and a walk for a game score of 77, the highest of the day. He currently ranks 12th.
