The majors saw eight of nine scheduled games played on August 7, 1920, as the rain postponed the game between the Senators and Browns, and the Reds played a double header at Philadelphia. The Red Sox defeated the White Sox in Chicago 4-2 for the low scoring contest of the day. Two other games that involved AL pennant contenders generated ten runs, the Indians beating the Athletics 9-1 and the Yankees defeating the Tigers 7-3.

Irish Meusel of the Phillies posts not only the best offensive game of the day in the game one, 6-1 Phillies win over the Reds, but the best overall day at the plate. In game one, he goes four for four with a double, home run, and five RBI. In game two, he collects two hits in four trips, with a second home run. He is now tied for second on the NL leader board in home runs with eight.

Babe Adams of the Pirates shuts out the Dodgers 7-0 for the best pitched game of the day. He holds the Dodgers to six hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. It’s a big win for the Pirates as they keep climbing back into the NL pennant race. Adams is now tied for the league lead in shutouts with five, and leads the NL with just 0.35 walks per nine innings.

Tris Speaker of the Indians goes two for three to raise his AL leading batting average to .420. George Sisler of the Browns did not play and remains at .401, now in second place. Joe Jackson of the White Sox takes an 0 for three to drop to .399.

In the AL pennant race, the Indians remain 3 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees, and now lead the defending AL Champion White Sox by five games.

The Dodgers loss, coupled with the Reds double header split cuts Brooklyn’s lead to 1/2 game over Cincinnati. The Giants fall to the Cubs 5-2 in eight innings, moving Pittsburgh back into a tie with New York for third place, both team three games out.
