This Date in 1920

Weather postponed three of the six scheduled games on June 16, 1920. Each league saw an extremely low scoring game as the Cubs beat the Braves in Boston 1-0, while the Browns took the Athletics in St. Louis 2-1. The one high scoring game of the day took place on the south side of Chicago. The Yankees beat the AL Champion White Sox 7-4.

That Yankees win featured the bat of Babe Ruth, who takes home offensive game of the day honors. Ruth collected two hits, slugging a triple and home run to go along with two walks. He is now first in slugging and second in OBP in the AL, with an OPS of 1.260. The homer bring his total to 18 for the season, a mark he reached the previous season on August 16th, also against Chicago.

This is the day Ruth takes over the top spot in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He stood fourth on morning of June 16, with Tris Speaker on top. At the end of the day, he stood over three points ahead of Speaker.

On the pitching side, Joe Oeschger of the Braves and Hippo Vaughn of the Cubs tie with game scores of 74, Vaughn getting the win and Oeschger taking the loss in the 1-0 game. Urban Shocker of the Browns is right behind them at 73. Both Oeschger and Vaughn struck out two. Oeschger allowed three hits, five walks and an earned run, while Vaughn gave up six hits and three walks in the shutout. The walks don’t seem to be the culprit of Oeschger’s loss, as the run was driven in from first base by a Fred Merkle (yes, that Merkle) triple. The best pitched game of the day goes to Vaughn, who after a two-week layoff wins his seventh game in a row.

At this point, there is a close two-team pennant race in the AL, and a strong five-team race in the NL. The Indians lead the Yankees by 1 1/2 games, up three in the AFILC. The White Sox drop six games back in third place. The World Champion Reds lead the Dodgers by 1/2 game tied in the loss column. The Cardinals are one game back, the Cubs three back, and the Pirates 3 1/2 games behind.
