Rendon Gets a Heavenly Deal

Reports now have Anthony Rendon signing with the Angels:

Third baseman Anthony Rendon has agreed to a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday.

The deal includes a full no-trade clause and doesn’t contain an opt-out clause, sources said. He is tentatively scheduled to undergo his physical Friday and be introduced at Angel Stadium on Saturday.

I am shocked by the low dollar amount. He averaged 6.6 fWAR and 5.5 rWAR over the last three seasons. During that time he ranks as one of the best offensive players in the majors. Those WAR averages lead me to believe he will post between 28.5 and 34.5 WAR over the next seven seasons, which should be worth somewhere between $255 million and $310 million.

I suspect two things are going on. Elite hitters are much more common today than elite pitchers, so pitchers are demanding and receiving a higher dollar amount per expected WAR. Secondly, because Mike Trout gets an average annual value of $35.4 million, the Angels could not pay someone not as good more money. That really should be a factor, but Trout does present a ceiling in value.

The Angels now have a two superstar team, something that helps get a team to the top. It’s possibly a three superstar team, if Shohei Ohtani becomes a dominant two-way player again. We will see if that’s enough to move the franchise to the top of a tough AL West.
