The Internet Baseball Writers Association of America (IBWAA) announced the winners in its Cy Young category Wednesday, with the Houston Astros’ Justin Verlander winning the group’s American League prize, and Jacob deGrom, of the New York Mets, being selected in the National League vote.

This is the 11th annual election for the IBWAA in the Cy category.

Verlander received 75 of 127 first-place votes (59.06%). Others receiving first-place votes include Cole, with 52 (40.94%).

deGrom received 77 first-place votes (62.10%). Others receiving first-place votes include Scherzer, with 25 (20.16%), Ryu (13, 10.48%) and Strasburg (6, 4.84%).

On the BBWAA side, the vote for AL Cy Young was close as well. Verlander and Cole received all the first and second place votes. Note that both Houston voters picked Verlander over Cole.

This is the first time in the history of AL Cy Young voting that teammates have finished first and second on the ballot. It occurred four times in the National League, including twice with the Diamondbacks’ Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling in 2001 and ’02. The other two times involved Dodgers teammates, Brooklyn’s Don Newcombe and Sal Maglie in the very first election of 1956 and Los Angeles’ Mike Marshall and Andy Messersmith in 1974.

Verlander, who was also honored in 2011 with the Tigers, is the 21st pitcher to win multiple Cy Young Awards, a list that features seven-time winner Roger Clemens; five-time winner Randy Johnson; four-time winners Steve Carlton and Greg Maddux; three-time winners Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer, Pedro Martinez, Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer and two-time winners Denny McLain, Bob Gibson, Gaylord Perry, Bret Saberhagen, Tom Glavine, Johan Santana, Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay and this year’s National League winner, Jacob deGrom..

deGrom won easily in the NL, getting 29 of the 30 first place votes.

DeGrom is the seventh NL pitcher to win the award in consecutive seasons. Maddux (1992-95) and Johnson (1999-2002) each won four years in a row. The other back-to-back winners were Koufax (1965-66), Kershaw (2013-14), Lincecum (2008-09) and Scherzer (2016-17). Successive victories have occurred five times in the AL: twice by Clemens (1986-87; 1997-98) and once each by Palmer (1975-76), Martinez (1999-2000) and Denny McLain (1968-69).

I voted on the IBWAA ballot, with Cole, Verlander, Lance Lynn, Charlie Morton, and Shane Bieber getting my votes in the AL. In the NL, my order was deGrom, Strasburg, Scherzer, Ryu, and Flaherty. I thought Cole pitched a bit better than Verlander. Verlander pitched a few more innings, Cole struck out more batters. It was a coin flip, and Verlander got more heads. Strasburg struck me as pitching better than his ERA. Scherzer just didn’t have enough innings to rank high that high in my mind.

Still, no real complaints about the voting. deGrom was clearly the best pitching in the NL, while Verlander and Cole were clearly the best two pitchers in the AL. Congratulations to all on outstanding years!
