Massive Tie Scenario

As of Sunday morning, the Diamondbacks and Dodgers are tied for the NL West lead, with the Rockies 1/2 game back, even in the loss column. That is a nice setup for a massive tie. The Diamondbacks and Dodgers play four more times, including today. This Diamondbacks and Rockies play seven more times, and the Rockies and Dodgers play six more times. The nice thing about the schedule is that none of these teams face each other the last weekend of the season, which allows more combinations of wins and losses that can result in a tie, provided the teams are close.

If you assume that these are evenly matched, .543 teams, then the probability of a three-way tie stands at 0.014. The most likely record for a tie would be 88-74. It’s a little early to be tracking this on a daily basis, but I will keep the spreadsheet up to date.

“Loss column”? Isn’t there some shorthand, or abbreviation, or initialese that we could use for this common yet very important phrase? Hmm …
