What Happened to the Super Teams?

Going into the season, it looked like there were going to be at least four super teams, four teams that could easily blow out their divisions. The Yankees, Astros, Indians, and Nationals looked head and shoulders above everyone else, and the Dodgers were really close to that status. What we have, however, are six very tight division races.

The Yankees are pretty much a super team, but the Red Sox got their pitching in order and are neck and neck with the Yankees.

The Astros played poorly at home compared to the road, allowing Seattle, Los Angeles, and even Oakland to hang with them. Just 4 1/2 games separate on through four.

The Indians bullpen has been off, so the Tribe is just 22-22. In a weak division, they are in first place, but the Twins and Tigers are just 2.5 games back.

The Nationals suffered a number of injuries to key players, and have yet to see Daniel Murphy in action this season. They are the only super team not in first place, and at 24-20 are three games back of the maturing Braves. Only 3 1/2 games separate one through four in the NL East.

The Dodgers, like the Nationals, suffered a number of injuries to key players, with Justin Turner and Clayton Kershaw missing a good portion of the season so far, and Corey Seager out for the rest of the year. They are 19-26, six games out in fourth place. The Diamondbacks lead the Rockies by 1/2 game, with the Giants three back.

The NL Central, which looked like the most competitive division going into the season, is living up to that analysis. Milwuakee leads, with 2 1/2 games separating first through fourth.

At the start of the season, there was talk of teams tanking. Some of the teams that are still in contention were accused of not trying to win. I believe that some of those teams were just marginal, and they are beating up on the truly bad teams. In a way teams trying to tank has helped give us some great races, but elevating the winning percentages of some of these marginal teams. Enjoy the fun!
