Two Tigers in the Hall

Jack Morris and Alan Trammell won election to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday:

Shortstop Alan Trammell and pitcher Jack Morris, who led Detroit to the 1984 World Series, have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The decision was announced by the Modern Era Committee Sunday night from the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Ted Simmons (11 votes, 68.8 percent) and Marvin Miller (seven votes, 43.8 percent) fell short of the threshold. Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker and Luis Tiant received fewer than seven votes.

I must admit that I was surprised when I looked back at Jack Morris’s career that he wasn’t as Hall of Fame worthy as I believed. Watching him pitch, watching him dominate when I saw him pitch, I thought for sure he would be an easy choice. It looks like the committee agreed with that. I might argue he deserves entry for his 1991 World Series performance. 🙂

Trammell was great, and probably should have been elected by the writers. Nice to see another hard hitting shortstop going into the Hall. Congratulations to both!

Some of the committee members played against Jack. If they think he’s a HoFer, I’m not going to gainsay them.

Tigers will have a day for each of them, I imagine. So there will be two days to go see the Tigers.

And the prejudice against Marvin Miller for being the most important person in baseball over the last century continues.
